What you can do with it
- Cut through old timber with the nails still in it, which stops a jigsaw dead
- Take apart a fitted wardrobe, a kitchen carcass or a garden shed
- Cut metal pipe, conduit and threaded rod where it stands
- Prune branches too thick for loppers and too small to justify a chainsaw
- Cut plasterboard, insulation and studwork during a strip-out
- Trim pallets and bulky waste down until it fits in the car
Europe mostly calls this a sabre saw, and it is the same tool under either name. It cuts with a straight push-pull stroke and the blade sticking out in front, so it reaches into corners, along walls and above your head where nothing else fits. At 1,6 kg you can hold it up there for a while. It is a rough tool by design: fast, loud and not remotely precise. If you want a clean edge or a curve, take the jigsaw instead - we rent one of those too.
How reciprocating saw rental works
- Pick your slot online. Three hours covers a wardrobe or an afternoon of pruning; a full day covers a kitchen strip-out.
- A PIN arrives by email. Open the locker at Iso Omena and lift out the case.
- Two batteries and a charger will keep the work going. Snap one in, keep the second in the charger, and swap when the first runs down.
- Change the blade by hand and slide the shoe by hand - no tools for either. Cut, then everything back in the case and back in the same locker.

Not included: blades for metal, plaster or pruning. The wood blade in the case handles clean timber, chipboard and furniture frames. For nail-embedded timber, pipe or old dried-out hardwood you want a bimetal blade - we sell blades at Tooly, so pick one up with the saw. Any standard reciprocating saw blade fits.
Rent or buy? A cordless reciprocating saw is about 75 € new as a bare tool, and a battery and charger add roughly 50 €, so a comparable setup runs to around 125 €. A full day here is 11,99 €. This is the classic one-weekend tool: people buy it for a demolition job and then never touch it again, because nothing in a finished home needs cutting this roughly. Rent it for the strip-out and let someone else find cupboard space for it.
Frequently asked questions
- How much does it cost to rent a reciprocating saw in the Helsinki area? From 4,49 € for three hours or 11,99 € for a full day at Tooly, picked up from a smart locker at Iso Omena in Espoo. No deposit.
- Is there a deposit? No. You pay for the rental and nothing else.
- Is a sabre saw the same thing? Yes. Sabre saw and reciprocating saw are two names for the same machine - the European shops usually say sabre saw.
- Are blades included? One wood blade comes fitted in the case. That covers clean timber, chipboard and furniture frames. For metal, plaster, pruning or nail-embedded wood you want a different blade, and we sell them at Tooly. Any standard reciprocating saw blade fits, so a blade from a hardware shop works too.
- What is the difference between this and a jigsaw? A jigsaw sits flat on the workpiece and cuts down through it, so it is accurate and good for curves. A reciprocating saw cuts sideways with the blade out in front, so it goes where a jigsaw cannot: into a wall cavity, around a pipe, through a branch. Use the jigsaw when the edge will be visible, this one when the material is going in a skip.
- Can it cut metal pipe? Yes, up to 6 mm of metal with a bimetal blade. Run it at a slower trigger speed, keep the shoe pressed against the pipe so the blade does not bounce, and let the saw do the work rather than leaning on it.
Pick-up and opening hours: The Tooly locker is on floor −1 of the Iso Omena shopping centre, Piispansilta 11, Espoo, near the Musti ja Mirri entrance. It is open every day from 6 am to midnight, so you can collect before work or after the shops close. Matinkylä metro station is in the same building, which puts the locker within easy reach from Helsinki and Vantaa without a car.
