Textile cleaning detergent
The carpet cleaner in the locker next door does the work, but it needs something in the water. This is a professional spray-extraction detergent - the grade used in hotels, care homes and car dealerships - decanted into a 60 ml bottle that covers up to six full tanks. It lifts oil, grease and mineral marks, and its odour eliminator deals with sweat, urine and nicotine rather than covering them up. 3,99 €, collected from a smart locker at Iso Omena in Espoo.
Quick facts

What it is for
- Sofas, armchairs and dining chairs
- Mattresses and fabric headboards
- Car seats, mats and boot linings
- Rugs, runners and carpeted floors in synthetic or natural fibre
- Pet marks and the smells that come with them
- Move-out cleaning, where the sofa has to look better than it is
What makes it different from a supermarket spray
- A shop-bought upholstery foam is designed to be sprayed on and wiped off. This is a concentrate built for machines that spray and extract, so the detergent goes into the fibre with the water and comes back out with the dirt. Three things follow from that.
- It removes rather than masks. The odour eliminator is a working ingredient, not a fragrance. Sweat, urine and nicotine are the three it is specified against, which is why it is used in car preparation bays and care homes.
- It is gentle for its strength. No bleach, no phosphates, no NTA. WoolSafe approved at working strength, so wool and natural fibres are within scope. At 1 % in the tank the working solution sits at pH 6–8, which is close to neutral - the concentrate is pH 9, but you never use it neat.
- It works in cold water. The carpet cleaner has no heater, and this detergent is specified to clean across the temperature range, so a cold tank is not a compromise.
How buying works
- Add a bottle to your order. You can buy one on its own, or alongside a carpet cleaner booking.
- A PIN arrives by email as soon as you pay.
- The bottle has its own locker cell, so you open two doors if you are collecting the machine as well.
- Nothing comes back. If you finish the bottle while you have the machine, drop the empty in the locker with it and we will recycle it.

How to use it
- Fill the tank first, then add the detergent. Two capfuls, about 10 ml, into a full clean water tank. Adding it to an empty tank makes it foam as the water goes in.
- Work in overlapping strips. Two methods, and the second is for anything stubborn.
- One pass: spray and extract in the same movement. This is the normal way and it is what most sofas need.
- Two passes: spray the area, leave it a minute or two to work, then go back over it with the trigger off and extract. Use this on set-in marks. The dwell time does more than pressure ever will.
- Then rinse. Empty the tank, refill with plain water and go over the same area again. This is the step people skip, and detergent left in the fibre dries hard and attracts dirt faster than before.
- Do not soak it. The fabric should come up damp, not wet. If water is pooling you are moving too slowly.
- Then vacuum and let it dry. Airflow matters more than heat. Open a window.
Where you cannot use it
- Test a hidden patch first - under a cushion or round the back - and let it dry fully before doing the whole piece. Beyond that, these are out.
- Fabrics that cannot take water: 1) Leather, suede and nubuck - water-based extraction strips the finish. 2) Silk and viscose - both mark and shrink. 3) Velvet and chenille - the pile crushes and does not come back. 4) Antique, hand-knotted or vegetable-dyed rugs - the dyes bleed. 5) Anything that is not colourfast, which is what the hidden-patch test is for.
- Floor coverings that are not synthetic or natural pile: 1) Sisal, seagrass, coir and jute-backed rugs - plant fibres shrink, stain and brown when they get wet
- Foam - or latex-backed rugs, where the backing can separate from the pile
Check the label first. Upholstery carries a cleaning code on its tag, usually under a cushion
- W - water-based cleaner. Fine.
- WS or SW - either type. Fine.
- S - solvent only. Do not use this.
- X - vacuum only. Do not use this or any liquid.
What you get
- One 60 ml bottle of professional textile detergent
- Dosing cap, about 4-5 ml when filled
- Nothing else. The carpet cleaner is rented separately and comes with its own nozzles and hose.
How far one bottle goes
- The bottle holds 14-15 capfuls, and at two capfuls per tank it covers up to six full tanks.
- That is enough for a three-seat sofa, two armchairs and a set of car seats, with some left over.
- A single tank does most sofas on its own.
- Buying two bottles only makes sense if you have booked the machine for several days or you are working through a whole flat.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I use this in the steam cleaner? No. The steam cleaner takes water and nothing else. Detergent makes its boiler foam and spit, and that is the one thing that damages it. This bottle is for the carpet cleaner only.
- How much do I use? Two capfuls, roughly 10 ml, in a full clean water tank. For heavier soiling, three capfuls or about 15 ml. More than that is wasted: past a point the extra detergent stays in the fabric instead of coming back out.
- Do I need to rinse afterwards? Yes, and this is the step people skip. Once you have cleaned with the solution, refill the tank with plain water and go over the same area again. That pulls the detergent back out of the fibres.
- How do I know if my sofa can take it? Look for the cleaning code on the tag under a cushion. W, WS or SW means water-based cleaning is fine. S means solvent only and X means vacuum only, and neither can have this. If there is no tag, test a hidden patch and let it dry before going further.
- Will it work on an old stain? Better than a spray will, but nothing is guaranteed. Spray the area, leave it a minute, then extract on a second pass. Old grease and pet marks usually shift. Dye, ink and rust generally do not, whatever you use.
- Does it smell? It has a mild fresh scent that goes as the fabric dries. The odour eliminator works on the smell itself rather than masking it, which is why it handles pet and smoke marks better than a supermarket spray.
- How long does it keep? Use it within a year of buying. Keep it somewhere that does not freeze: it solidifies just below zero, so a car boot in February is a bad place for it.
Safety
- Keep out of reach of children and away from food and drink
- Do not drink. If swallowed, rinse the mouth and drink plenty of water
- If it gets in your eyes, rinse under running water for several minutes
- Store upright, away from frost
- Do not pour leftover detergent down the drain - bring the bottle back to the locker instead
Pick-up and opening hours
- The Tooly locker is on floor −1 of the Iso Omena shopping centre at Piispansilta 11, Espoo, near the Musti ja Mirri entrance. Lockers are open every day from 6 am to midnight. The bottle sits in its own cell, so if you are picking up the carpet cleaner at the same time you will open two doors on the same trip.
Machines it must not go in
- The steam cleaner. It takes water and nothing else - detergent makes the boiler foam and spit, and that is the one thing that damages it.
- The window cleaning robot. Water only in its tank as well.
- Any machine that sprays without extracting. This has to be sucked back out, not left in.
Surfaces it is not for
- Hard floors, tiles, wood and laminate. This is a textile product, and the carpet cleaner has no floor nozzle. Hard surfaces are the steam cleaner's job.
- Walls and painted surfaces.
